He served in his brother’s Perrette milk store as a stock boy when he was nineteen. He was employed by Perrette’s owner to set up and scout new stores in 1969. He departed Perrette because he thought that the company did not treat its workers well after he had opened 100 of Perrette’s 184 stores. He then joined a competitor called Provi-Soir, as the head of real estate, development, and construction. While he was studying English he pursued business courses for three years at HEC Montreal because he wanted to open his own store. Alain finally purchased two Provi-Soir franchises using his earnings from private real-estate investments.
Prior to establishing Alimentation Couche-Tard in 1980 he worked independently as a retailer in the late 1970s. From 1980 to 2014 he worked for Alimentation Couche-Tard as Chief Executive Officer where he conducted the company as it became larger from one convenience store to over 12,500 convenience stores across the globe. He noted factors in Couche-Tard’s success to be using the best ideas and maintaining a decentralized organizational structure. It obtained U.S.-based Circle K in 2003. From 1997 to 2009 he was an associate of the board of Québecor. Alain was awarded an International Horatio Alger Award.
